One thing that concerns me regarding both hybrids and EVs are spontaneous lithium Ion battery fires. There are a number of YT videos on these instances, some fires on the road, others in a garage, even one video of a cargo ship entire load of vehicles catching on fire. Due to my work experience in the renewable energy field developing utility scale energy storage facilities, I have a strong sense of caution at the moment.
It would be a neat trick indeed for a Hybrid's NiMH pack to experience a Lithium Ion fire.
Trick or not, it happens...

That happened in Erie, Colorado, in April. Mountain View Fire Rescue crews responding to reports of a fire at a home found smoke in the secondary garage. It was emanating from a Jeep Wrangler 4XE hybrid vehicle.

Electric-vehicle stalwarts stand firm in their belief that the fire risk is far less than it is with gasoline-powered cars: There are 25 fires per 100,000 sold, according to one auto insurance study. Hybrid cars experience a higher rate of fires than both EVs and gasoline-powered cars.

If someone wants a hybrid, go for it.
