We use Google Sheets. We have two rows:
Budgeted and Actual
We have a budget meeting near the beginning of each month and we predict what expenses we have that month. We charge everything on a credit card, so we then go and categorize every purchase on our credit cards from the previous month, tally them up and see what the actual spending was and compare the two. Did we go over in groceries? Why? or why was our entertainment category bigger or smaller?
We started this more than 10 years ago and it only takes about an hour a month to go through it all and make our plan.
I geek out on it.
