Congratulations on the new job.Thank you all for your responses.
I managed to land a school just 2.5 miles away from my house. Still a public school, so no change to my state pension.
What I lose:
6k in salary next year
Lose tenure
Have to start new investing accounts
What I gain:
Anywhere from 1.5 to 2 hours of commute time each day. New commute skips the toll I used to go through and only includes one traffic light!
Get tenure back after just one year of good reviews
The following year the salary would jump ahead of where I am now in the other county due to new contract their union negotiated
The insurance options in new county a bit different. In my county I get the "top" plan (Aetna Open Access) that allows use of in and out of network doctors. It only costs $221 per pay. In the new county their Cigna Open Access In-Network Plan is their mid-tier option and costs about $200 whereas their "top" Cigna Open Access that allows out of network is a whopping $350. Makes me wonder how much we even use out-of network. The doctors of ours that I've talked to all take in-network.
Is it best to just sign up for in and out of network just in case? Or if you have an in-network with a large network (which it seems we do) should you stay with in-network and save the money?
I would ask my family doctor if they have any trouble finding in network doctors for referrals. If the answer is “sometimes”, I d get the insurance with the better coverage.
