No, I would trade it in and unless they subtract more than $600 off of it for the issue, let them deal with it.


As just a shot in the dark, did you maybe try and put a new gas cap on and see if that works? Also, sometimes just some silicon grease on the rubber seal of the gas cap can also fix a check engine light for that code. The mechanic may indeed be correct and its not the cap, but I'd probably throw $20 at it first to just see. It's a pretty common fault code for a car that age where it just needs a new gas cap.

It could also just be intermittent. Clear the code and see. I had a situation where someone borrowed a car and overfilled it at a gas station. Sometimes people see how many times they can "click" the gas pump and try and top it off. You really should stop filling the tank the first time the handle clicks. My car and garage spelled like an oil refinery for weeks, but it eventually went away.
