Personal Consumer Issues • Car batteries: Any experts here?

If you have a battery long enough that it may fail, it is better and less expensive to replace it rather than get stuck someplace. Even if you could have gotten another year out it, it does not pay to get every last bit of use. After all, if a battery costs $125 and it lasts 5 years, that is only $25/year or $2/month. It is not worth scrimping in this area.
What is time point of "long enough"?
And does load testing harm a battery?
Thanks.
It's hard to give a general answer. The lifetime depends on time, climate, miles and the battery ratings. One good indicator is your experience with auto batteries in the past. A load test should not harm a battery.
