Here are the timelines to see if they match you memory.I had or borrowed a John Mayall album. I remember liking Room to Move. Mayall and Springsteen came to Curry Hicks Cage at UMass for a concert. Too poor, I didn’t go. I remember thinking I didn’t want to go because Springsteen was on the covers of Time and Newsweek, but really, I had no money. But really I didn’t forgive Springsteen for being on two covers until I got home from my Peace Corps interlude. I didn’t realize that Mayall was that old.
In November 1973 I moved to Western Massachusetts, living in Amherst 3 weeks after I got here. At that point Springsteen was a relative unknown. I think I'd heard of him but had never heard any of his music.
He had played at the University of Massachusetts sometime in the month prior to me moving here.
It was not until almost two years later - October 1975 - that Springsteen was on the cover of both Time & Newsweek - not long after the release of his epic Born to Run record.
At that time I was well aware of Springsteen and if he'd been playing at the University of Massachusetts at that time ... I'd have known about it and been there.
So it is possible you are conflating two separate memories here into one.
