Personal Finance (Not Investing) • The cost of not using credit cards with rewards?

Last month, I booked two one way tickets to France on KLM & Air France using points from my Chase rewards. I got a 25% bonus transferring my points to Flying Blue miles so my total spend was 38,000 points plus $280. I'm not sure what the non miles prices were, but I think it was ~$1000 so I was close to 2¢ per point.

Incidentally, we have a Chase Sapphire Reserve card that pays 3 points per dollar on travel and dining plus a Chase Freedom that pays 5 points per dollar on rotating categories, currently Amazon.
That's a pretty good redemption, and they are out there.

When you use the Chase portal, does the ticket show up in your KLM/Air France account?

My biggest concern with travel portals like Chase's is that if there are irregular ops (weather, cancellation, etc.), I don't want to have to deal with a booking company to straighten things out. I stopped booking hotels through travel portals after being burned a couple times. The hotel tells you that you have to call the booking company and the booking company is generally useless. Not worth the headache for me.

The only exception is using Amex to book United flights. When I do that the flight shows up in my United account immediately and I can make changes directly with United.
