They definitely don't make refrigerators like they used to. But the three failures are between two refrigerators over 10 years; this is probably typical or perhaps even better than average for modern refrigerators. I hear constant stories on new refrigerator unreliability. Two times the fridges failed it was just a thermistor or something similar which caused the unit to not cool properly. The third time the compressor went out. In all three incidents we moved the food from the bad unit to the good unit. Longest repair time was nearly 3 weeks. We'll never have a home without two full size units again. Also makes entertaining much more convenient as we don't need to pick up ice bags and set up coolers anymore. That sounds like a horribly high failure rate. There just two of us and we've have two full size refrigerator/freezers for at least the last 10 years. We have one full and the other half full most of the time. Offers peace of mind in case one konks out (happened three times since having two units). Getting a replacement unit or a tech out isn't a code red affair. We have solar so no additional cost to run the second unit.
We have second full size unit, mainly because our current house came with a nice side by side in the kitchen and we have been lugging our Kitchen Aid we bought in 2011 along with us over four moves. We really like it. The second unit is in the garage because there was no other place for it. It holds just a little overflow.
