Personal Investments • If I sell VIIIX and VTI before dividends are distributed do I lose out?

There is no gaming the dividend payments. The only difference is due to taxation.
But you could game the capital gains distributions, no?

Specifically, it appears that Vanguard’s municipal money market fund will pay out less than 1 cent capital gain near the end of December.

If you sold all of your shares in that fund before the record date, you could completely avoid the capital gains hit but still get all of the interest accrued through the sale date, no?
This is only possible because the capital gain is less than a penny per share, so it is lost due to rounding, along with other market-value adjustments to the value of a money-market fund which are also less than a penny.
