Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Delaying Social Security is getting less advantageous

How were you able to make that calculation with what is posted here so far?
By knowing the amount involved in anyone's social security income, in the context of the amounts we talk about here - earnings from a few million dollars (vs. more or less) in deferred and taxable accounts, etc. - is within the range of longer-term return assumptions that everyone plans for. It's enough to make a difference; just not a predicable difference that would be independent of assumptions. [Unnecessary comment speculating on future of SS has been removed. Moderator Pops1860] Now, if you could decide year-by-year whether and how much to claim or not - or better yet month-by-month - I could see that as being more of a predictable planning play for a year or so into the future.
"I agree that it won't make a predictable difference"
So for your assumption to be correct ....we need these items to support that?
- a guess on how much this person has in taxable and non taxable accounts
- a guess on their marital status
- a guess on their draw rate and overall portfolio goals
- you would make future SS payments unknown
I can learn from you or Tibbetts or many smart BH. Married. Nominally 1M Roth, 1.3M taxable, 3M deferred. No pension. Spend 168K annually. May increase to 180k. RMDs look like 105-130ish initially.
That's the scenario I would have expected for a typical person posting here. There's more information that you could plug into a calculator (such as unrealized capital gains), and then you can run countless scenarios with different assumptions (lifespans, future returns, future of SS, etc.) It's really your own person assumptions and your confidence in them that will determine the result. Sometimes there are surprises; for example you might find surprisingly little difference in lifetime spendable income between some very different strategies, which could make it less stressful in deciding between alternatives.
