Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Is it possible Vanguard accidentally withheld taxes on my Roth conversion?

Small update, Vanguard called back to say that once the calendar year has turned they can't get back the withholding. Which I KNEW and did not request. I had asked to see whether the error was mine or theirs. But I decided not to pursue this any more. I don't need to give VG any more work than they already have. :)

But I did learn new info. 1) If indicating withholding, a w4-r form would have had to be filled out, as Alan mentioned above and 2) that election remains until changed.

1) I've never seen a W4-R form until today when I googled it. I realize that perhaps that if I completed the information online I wouldn't necessarily "see" the form. But I'm certain I would have seen some sort of confirmation/signing screen which would have explicitly indicated to me I was going to have taxes withheld.

2) The withholding election was zero on my wife's account when we did her 2024 conversion, so it can't be true that I elected 10% last year if withholding elections indeed persist.

I'm mostly curious and this is not "stressing me out" or anything.
