I gave about 4.5 months notice at my last full-time job. Two people in similar managerial positions to mine at our company had recently left very abruptly. It was a very chaotic time and I didn't want to be perceived as being part of that exodus. So I told my boss I would be leaving in the next several months but that we should work together to time it appropriately and that I would train my replacement. It turned out to be to my benefit in terms of crossing over with several paid holidays and, also, paid out days of accrued PTO I could stuff into my 401k for the new year when the clock reset.
