I have owned 6 subarus as far back as 1998 to 2021. (2 outbacks, 2 WRX, 1 legacy sedan 1 cross trek). MY last new Subaru was a 2013. I can't speak to the newer years.
Every car went to 100K++ flawlessly (which is where I use to trade). I would have lost on any extended warranty.
Both my sons got hand me down subarus and got to 180K with minimal issues... one of those were traded at 180K and was still going strong.
all of my cars were manual shift so I can't speak to the CVT. At a minimum I would want the warranty on the transmission extended to the lenght of the OEM warranty.
other than wear and tear items like brakes, I only saw a few annoyances.
1. learn to change headlights. They seem to need to be replaced often. It may be that at one point Ihad 4 in the house but it felt like i was always changing one out.
2. Swap out the factory battery at 3-4 years with a "real battery". The original batteries just never seem to last as long.
The only major issue i saw was the dreaded head gasket leak.
It happened to my son's 2005 outback at 180,000. it had enough other issues that we junked it. (keep in mind 2 sons learned to drive on this manual stick car and it wasn't the best cared for vehicle). It started to leak a Qt of oil every 3000 miles and my son didn't do a good job of keeping track. My son drove 90 minutes down to my town. It needed tires. I heard it rattle when he pulled in at the garage. I told the mechanic to check if the exhaust was loose. it had no oil This was a common with my son. It ran at least another year before the head gasket issue... My other 5 had no issue).
I would probably get another one as I have had very good luck with them. I only bought something else because I had a couple different needs in retirement that it wouldn't fit. I do see going back to subaru someday.
