My parents never talked about money management. They were depression-era kids and just wanted to provide for their family which they did very, very well. They were two teachers who gave their three kids a home, food on the table, vacations and private college for each of us. And lots of love.

The only thing I remember about money and my Dad was him sitting on the edge of the bed with his checkbook paying bills.

When I got my first job out of college in media relations (I retired as a nurse but I was first a writer by trade), we all went out for drinks and my boss mentioned he had $20,000 saved. I was shocked. I said, "that's amazing Dan!" He said, "well what am I gonna do when I'm an old guy??"

That did it. That altered my money mindset at age 24. It was a bumpy road and I had to restart after a divorce and career change at age 39, but it set my intention to be money-conscious and to be a saver.
