Investing - Theory, News & General • Ronald Reed the Janitor who amassed 8 million

I've read his story before; it's quite interesting, I sure would like to know more about him and why he did what he did. I think going without to the extreme (as I'd say this case is an example of), shows some type of imbalance.

I just happen to know quite a few folks that grew up very poor but they all changed things around as adults and are pretty well off. To say their poverty has shaped them would be a MASSIVE understatement. Of the 4 people that come to mind (3 have great jobs while one married well), the one that married well is a dedicated saver and is reluctant to invest since it's risky and would prefer a very very safe asset allocation; too safe for their age, but they don't want to repeat their poverty experience. Her husband is quite happy since she's frugal in spending and he does the investing, so they've amassed quite a good amount as a couple. The second one doesn't save much but he makes great money as an airline pilot and buys all the toys, cars, house and will never go without (until of course retirement comes which it probably wont ever happen for this person). The third one seems more balanced financially, great job and does invest, but their personal life is a reflection of the family trauma that came from poverty and it's a complete train wreck with it's own wake of destruction. The 4th one chose to do social work and work with folks in poverty. While pursuing this dream path of theirs they ran up a ton of university debt to do it, to include a masters....in Social Work. Their job is good, but the return on that investment will never happen in their lifetime.

I'd imagine Ronald Reed had something similar that significantly shaped him, but of course, that is only an assumption; he could have just been brilliant and saw nothing worth buying.
