Compared to What (Live at Montreux Jazz Festival) (1969)

Les McCann RIP

Video of the above recording here, but the sound isn't quite as good: Les McCann & Eddie Harris Compared To What

Trumpet: Benny Bailey
Drums: Donald Dean
Tenor Saxophone: Eddie Harris
Producer: Joel Dorn
Bass Guitar: Leroy Vinnegar
Piano, Vocals: Les Mccann
Producer: Nesuhi Ertegun
Writer: Gene McDaniels
That is a cool song. RIP Les McCann. I saw him live once a long time ago. :beer
This was played a lot on the (underground FM) station I listened to in 1969-1971. I’ve never seen that video, thanks.
Yeah, that album, Swiss Movement, was one of my sister's albums that I liked 50 years ago. It's a kind of jazz that I actually kind of "get." That opening tune, cultural commentary and all, was always my favorite, but there are several other good ones on the album.

The obit that I read, Les McCann, Pianist, Singer and Soul Jazz Pioneer, Dies at 88, noted that McCann played on Marian McPartland's radio show, and they ended the show with a duet on “Compared to What.” I'd like to hear that, but I couldn't find it easily on YouTube. (I used to enjoy McPartland's show driving back to CT from weekends in the Berkshires on Sunday nights.)

There's a funny story behind McCann's appearance on stage that day, relayed in the obit. 8-)

The next tune on the album is pretty cool, too!

Cold Duck Time (Live at Montreux Jazz Festival)
A really good album and from what I have read, the group was somewhat of an ad hoc ensemble some of who had never played together before. Another tune not from the Swiss Movement album, "Burnin' Coal" that has that Les McCann groove:
