I think vineviz was a finance professional, in fact. He had some very interesting posts.I agree completely. The more personal posts are great for understanding the psychological and emotional aspects of investing, especially when you realize that other Bogleheads are thinking and feeling the same things you are. On the other hand, a poster who goes by "vineviz" really helped me understand bonds and I don't know anything about him. So you get both; the theoretical and the personal. It's a great site. With someone like Old Sheepdog, it was a privilege to have known his innermost thoughts and fears at that time. I had an old friend, who was dying, he was 4 years younger than I am now, and he told me "It has been a privilege to share your inner world-- how you understand the world and see things". I didn't know then what he was on about, but as I grow older, I realise how rare those genuine insights into people are.
There are posters here who are not finance professionals but apply their mental disciplines to the field. Nisiprius comes to mind. The result is very illuminating posts.
Also of course tax and other specialists who post -- that's very useful.
Over on the international side, we have Ted Swipett, who is a goldmine of information on the problems of expats who return from USA, UK pension taxation, US citizens resident abroad, etc.
