I faced a similar decision about 7 years ago when I retired, although I was a young O-6 and in theory left some pension money on the table.
Are you located where you would like to retire? There is some value in Uncle Sam paying one last PCS and (if possible) moving to somewhere you are considering living. A year or so on a staff gives you time to job hunt, work on on your VA disability application and provide a pretty soft landing.
You can always talk to your senior rater about passing on school and asking for a retirement job if you think they would be accommodating.
I ended up with some job offers that made retirement a no brainer since my salary was in excess of my military pay and the pension was enough to cover our day-to-day living costs. Currently looking to really retire in the next 6 months, while I still have the health and vigor to take advantage of them.
