Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Teen Driver in 6 months, any suggestions?

Make your teen driver drive the car a lot. That is, every time you are in the car with them, they are the driver. Never drive yourself while they are in the car with you.

Also start practicing "narrative driving" now.

As for car insurance, our insurance didn't change while our kids had learner's permits, but not actual licenses. You would be able to get them to 17.5 years old before you need to do anything about insurance.
+1

We are in the learning phase right now with our 16 year old.
1. I have invested in more instructor led lessons than the CA mandated 6 hours/3 sessions.
2. Kid is driving when possible in town after 2 months of learner permit
3. I had the instructor take kid on the freeway for experience.
4. Kid is generally a good driver, I have seen improvements in the first 6-8 weeks.
5. It takes thousands of years of experience to get to a peak driving level. Let’s remember that!
6. I now feel comfortable with kid going to the next town.
7. I still want kid to take more instructor led lessons

The standard of driving around here is terrible. It’s not about the kids ability to ‘drive’ but to be aware of the 10 things around them that could be a surprise and drive defensively.

A friend in Germany mentioned it costs roughly $5k total and about a year to get a kid their full license/pass their test/take 30+ hours of instructor led training. That is what I call having ‘driving standards’
