Personal Investments • European moving to the US for studies: Continue investing in VWCE or start a Roth IRA?

If my plan was to be in the US for only a few years, I would want to minimize my entanglement with US finance, tax, retirement accounts. I'd want only the minimum number of accounts needed to function, which in your case is a checking account to receive pay, from which to pay bills, and to connet to revolut for when I want to move money to/from Europe. If after the PhD you decide you want to stay enough to become a legal resident, there will be time enough then to open and fund retirement accounts. Until you've got some reasonable prospect in your own mind of retiring in the US, my suggestion is to not open any US retirement accounts. Especially when young, it's worthwhile to maintain a high degree of personal flexibility and agility to take advantage of career opportunities.
