10th grade. Algebra 2 & Trig, English honors, Chemistry honors (weighted), AP World History (weighted), Engineering. What grade is he in, what math and sciences is he doing? What standardized testing results do you have? Is he doing test prep? Is he aware of his GPA?
I think a lot of the replies are OTT.
Look at CSUs and WUE, and really is enjoying robotics a good indicator of engineering proclivity?
Engineering is just a slog, it is math and coding and math. You need to know a bit about what math track he is on and what test scores he will get before getting over your skis to pay full freight OOS, because schools like TAMU will for sure take your OOS $ and have a high chance of weed out just as the UCs would, same bun fight for classes, just for more money. His biggest attribute would be doggedness in the face of difficulty. Is the GPA is because he is taking a rigorous load, (APS, IB)? What his is rank?
Don't be too focused on extra curriculars, that is an overstated issue for most college applicants. IMO you want to look at cost first for a kid that may well not end up in eng. Weed out, drop out, major change, these are all super common.
Chemistry has been a challenge. The others are A’s or very close to A’s. Only standardized test he’s done is the psat. SAT prep will be on the calendar for next summer as a rising junior.
He is aware of his GPA. Scope to improve on the finals/tests. He is working hard. It’s a slog!
