Thanks all, again. You've confirmed my hunches and given some good tips. The index fund strategy was something I'd read a lot about here, and in JB Quinn's book, though she didn't call it by that name. Instead of 3 buckets I'll start with 2. Not sure about those international funds yet.

Of index funds, my friend's partner said (paraphrasing) that they are best for certain types, like young folks in first jobs investing small amounts monthly, or those who don't know what to do with their new 401k at work and HR can't advise other than to suggest, perhaps, a little of everything. Also, this person feels index funds don't usually yield much amd are not good for help with retirement income. Wonder if they really believe this, or are just trying to get my business. Maybe both.

To Saintor who suggsted buying a house; we were homeowners for 12 years in the 1990s and 2000's. But the costs of upkeep were too much for our civil service salaries. (A 1904 house, too!) Also, we don't know where we're going to end up since we're priced out of Seattle. We only happen to have a great deal on rent, by luck, for the last 14 years. We're leery about condos. Hard to say what will happen.
