For now I will be happy if he can max his pretax ones and do Roth IRA with remainder. That would be a good startNow you've added into the equation international funds - which is fine. As you note in column D, you can still approximate the total US stock market with the percentage going into domestic funds, and the chosen 20% into international funds. Our vote would be for either column B or D, and probably if push came to shove we would go with column D to capture some international exposure in the 401k. One should also factor in the overall portfolio if a Roth IRA and a taxable account will also be used by your son.
