Funny you mention the bonus chase. I told our son about the Boglehead sporting event
of bonus-chasing and he rolled his eyes. I've never messed with it and it seems he feels the same way.
We have been talking a lot about index funds and he has been buying ETFs at E-Trade. It all sounded good to get all his funds in one place but in practice it hasn't been very easy. It took E-Trade about three weeks just to get the transfers started, about ten phone calls made by our son, and resubmission of forms several times because E-Trade had some glitches.
I have an account there (taxable) and it has been ok for the most part.
Thanks again for your comments.

This problem is a good example of
1) Benefits of ETFs (more problems with portability of open end funds, and operations in general).
2) Benefits of avoiding too many ACAT transfers, things CAN go wrong. I don't chase bonuses, both because I don't want these one time hassles and because the grass is not always greener.
I had an Etrade account for years, their service USED to be great. No idea with MS having taken over if the service is the same.
I got out immediately after MS took over, for reasons unrelated to MS (consolidated at Vanguard).
