I just heard about these for the first time today, in another discussion thread. What opinions and experience have people had with them? I've read only a little so far, for example at the Royal Bank of Canada website here:

Some of the RBC GICs sound like US CDs. The interest rates are intriguing, like 4.45% guaranteed for 5 years. Five-year CD at Ally is currently 3.9%
Others, like their "income builder GIC" sound like period-certain annuities where one can choose the period, the initial principal, the payout frequency, and how much money if any you want left at the end of the period. Seems like it could be a useful product in some circumstances.
