Personal Consumer Issues • Questions to ask during minisplit quote

I will echo the comments about getting multiple quotes. We found not only a great range of quoted prices, but also approaches. And while I am no HVAC professional, I do know that warm air rises and cold air sinks, and some ideas seemed to ignore that.

Our biggest concerns were:
1. Number of wall units required and a convincing argument this would cool the house
2. Visual impact and noise
3. Warranty and maintenance
4. Temperature range and efficiency
5. Available tax credits

We went with two Mitsubishi wall-units, installed by a "Diamond Contractor", though with an outside unit/condenser sized for three. We were unsure how effectively this would cool back rooms, so wanted to leave ourselves an option.

This was now 5+ years ago. They've worked great. At the time we had them installed, with the current technology available, we understood these were very inefficient as a heating source. That said we've still run them in shoulder season (e.g. early fall) for 30-60 before we've turned on the furnace, just to take the chill out of the room.

I'm curious if anyone has any information regarding newer technology, where a mini-split system can now deliver more efficient heating in a colder northern climate. I mean the laws of physics haven't appreciably changed, but this would nice...
