Personal Investments • Am I putting too much emphasis on reducing AGI?

DC is set on an in-state school and has great grades so I’m pretty sure the plan will work out, but I still need to run the calculations for net price, and I’ll check about CSS (thanks for the tip!) Sticker price is around $30K/year for tuition plus housing.
We found that the state colleges have many more students applying than privates. Those that are desperately poor seemed to get the money at the public colleges. We didn't. Since they don't apply as often at the privates and the private colleges have the large endowments, that's where we got the financial aid. That made our out-of-pocket cost less than going to a state university.

Have your child apply to at least one private college!
Celia, I didn’t want to open up a can of worms around private vs public but this school is, in fact, a private in-state school. Our kids are also currently in private middle and HS so we’re used to sacrificing for education! It does seem like the private college offers more generous aid which is great.
We went private for both kids. No regrets. Youngest is a college senior and they gave him a second scholarship from a corporate donor. 💙.
