I sorta understand it back when I was single and living alone. Sometimes, one could get things for cheaper by going to alternative places. For me, items such as chewing gum, cereals, meats, fruits, milk, etc were all cheaper elsewhere, not to mention that Costco often didn't (and still doesn't) carry items I want (e.g. skim milk, in particular organic skim milk). I pretty much got overwhelming majority of my shopping done at Trader Joe's (with occasional trips to Target and Whole Food).I've never understood the Costco hate on this forum. Try to find top tier gas, $1.50 lunch, and high quality bulk with a great return policy cheaper.
But I certainly began seeing its value after moving in with my wife (then partner). Items such as fish (e.g. sockeye), some veggies, prepared food (e.g. pulled pork), and some fruits are better values at Costco. I still don't do even the plurality of my grocery shopping at Costco, but it does offer good value for a household of two. Even more the case after I bought a car that needs at least 91-octane gas, as Costco has 93-octane that is cheaper than and seemingly better than what anyone else offers.
