I'd figure out what card you want and get a student version, with the intention of holding onto that card for a long time (to build your credit). The student versions are designed for just this situation.

For instance, if you like Chase cards, get a Chase student card. Once you have a job and income, you can often product change that student card into the full version of whatever card you want without losing your credit history.

I probably wouldn't get a discover card. They just aren't accepted as many places as Mastercard or Visa and with the proposed Capitol One merger, who knows what will happen with them. You're better off getting a card from a major bank.
