Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Best "free" American Express card?

My gold card annual fee hit and I'm probably going to cancel the card because I hardly use it since I've switched to BoA. I can't justify $250 a year for it. I have a long history with Amex, and I want to have at least one Amex only for access to the premium rental car protection.

Between the cash magnet and everyday cash, is one better than the other?

Does Amazon count for the 3% cash back for "online" purchases with the everyday cash?

I don't think Amex offers the basic green card or "senior gold" anymore, so one of the free cash back cards is probably my best option.
They still offer the green card. $150 a year.

It was my first ever credit card when I had my first job in 1984, after I graduated college. It was the only one I could get because, at the time, it had the requirement that the balance be paid in full each month and I had no credit history.

There was a time when I was about to get rid of it, but then we joined Costco which, at the time, only took American Express. Then they changed.

I still have it. And I think about ditching it often. The one reason I've ever hesitated is that it is the one card among many that I've had over the years which just flat out always works when I travel internationally. Except for an employer supplied card, every other card I've ever had has had issues, despite giving them the usual heads-up that I'll be traveling internationally with dates and countries included.

And so I continue to ponder, year after year....

Cheers.
