Congratulations! We also had twins before our oldest turned two and they are all a lot of fun. Our twins are fraternal, but the same gender, and still share a room at the age of 8.
Definitely agree on increasing life insurance. I have a $3M, 20-year term life insurance policy and my spouse has a $1M, 20-year term policy, but we're in a VHCOL area with an expensive mortgage.
We heard a lot of horror stories about getting no sleep when the babies were newborn but honestly our girls slept great. We had no issues there and did not sleep train. All three were really easy babies and great sleepers.
We both work and daycare costs were about $3,500 per month for the "cheap", part-time school. We also had a nanny that would come to our house and take the kids to daycare and then pick them up and care for them until one of us got home from work. This worked great for us until the twins kept getting sent home for being sick. At that point my mom stepped in and started helping and eventually moved in with us. We still sent all three kids to daycare, but we didnt have to worry about leaving work to pick them up if they got sent home. She was only in her 50s when we had our twins so still young and able to handle all three kiddos.
We started 529s when the kids were babies and contribute $500 per month per kid. Next year the kids will be 8, 8, 9 and that will be the last year we fund their 529s. After that we'll switch over to taxable brokerage accounts for their savings.
Kids activities are very expensive when you have three doing them at the same time. Right now, our kid activity line item is second only to our mortgage. Travel is more expensive, going out to eat is expensive, getting tutors is expensive. The list goes on. I'm also planning several years ahead to when they start driving as I hear teen drivers cause insurance rates to sky rocket.
Overall, they're expensive but having three close in age is amazing and we feel lucky they're all so close to each other.
