Personal Finance (Not Investing) • You Worked a Long Time. How Did You Do It?

Wow, lots of people have enjoyed long careers. For an MD, my advice would be to think long and hard about what specialty you would really enjoy. Also, you need to consider your employment model/situation and the hospital environment, medical staff, and clinical support staff. If any of those things are not right, or simply untenable, you may find yourself wanting to look for a different setting in a few years. However, changes in job settings do not mean total burnout. If you enjoy your specialty you can always find different settings to pursue it.

My wife was an academic. She really enjoyed her field, teaching students, doing research, and interacting with her department colleagues. She ended up working until age seventy. I was a hospital VP. I enjoyed my job, but I always planned to retire by age sixty. When sixty arrived, I still enjoyed my job and there was one part of it the medical center could not replace easily. I offered to stay on as a consultant, doing my phone and written work from home and coming in for meetings when needed. I ended up working about one-quarter time on that model until age sixty-seven.
