Good information. Please keep the forum updated as things progress. For anyone interested, I opened a joint brokerage account at Schwab international and it was a hassle free effort. The account is fully functional and the system didn't allow me to proceed without filing a W8-BEN. Kept the warning message on until my spouse and I filled in the details. The only catch is $25k needs to be invested when opening, but transfer of assets counts. So working on that front now. Fingers crossed everything is smooth with them going forward. Thanks for the information ukusinvestor. Your suggestion is definitely a good consideration and had been on my mind as TedSwippet also had mentioned recently that he was looking at the possibilities of Schwab account. Also, it might offer a path to avoid the 30% withholding tax too, as they appear to treat NRAs differently. It's definitely something I'm now going to serious look into...in the meantime I had some positive news to wake up to this morning and it would appear (after me sending a serious complaint earlier this week to Vanguard and calling out their discriminatory behaviour against NRAs), that they have miraculously agreed to add / link my USA Wise US Inc USD Account now after checking all the other information that I had sent them. So hoping there are no other roadblocks to take withdrawals/distributions...but still their decision to take 30% tax withholding leaves a sour taste as hadn't planned for that change happening earlier this year, but on the surface a step forward for now...but Schwab might still be a far better option full stop. As this journey continues to evolve will share any insight to help others and definitely going to look at Schwab. Thanks ukusinvestor.
I had a positive chat with Schwab a few weeks ago. They said they would forward some details to my email, but it all went quiet. I've let that slip for now while I pursue a complaint with Vanguard over their abject failure to properly deal with the US/UK tax treaty, but plan to get back to it when time permits. In the meantime, then, an NRA success story of a transfer of assets out of an obstructive Vanguard and into a customer-friendly Schwab would be a welcome one.
