Can we do tax loss harvesting between TSLA stock and TSLL (2x bull TSLA single stock ETF)?

My cousin is under water with TSLA stock in taxable account but doesn't want to sell. Can he capture tax loss by selling TSLA stock and buying TSLL (2x bull) with similar exposure.

No, they are substantially identical.
There is a good discussion on what is "substantially identical" on a recent Bogleheads podcast (https://boglecenter.net/bogleheads-on-i ... pisode-67/) around the 43 minute mark. I would argue that TSLL is not at all substantially identical to TSLA.
Other than cash/cash equivalents the sole holding are Tesla and Tesla derivative instruments... in what way is that not substantially identical?
Is a derivative instrument substantially identical to the underlying stock? I don’t know but here are some articles that mention it:
