I had a 2019 Kindle (not paperwhite) and just got the newest Kindle Paperwhite. It's like night and day. I wish I had gotten one earlier. The bigger screen, more PPI, and warm backlight are amazing. It's also much faster than my old Kindle.
I traded my old one in to Amazon and got a credit and another % off. You just drop the old one off at Whole Foods and they take care of the rest. I ended up paying somewhere around $130 for the Paperwhite with no ads. Worth it to me considering how much I use it and the old one lasted 5 years.
Whatever you get, I'd recommend paying to get rid of the ads. I always had ad personalization off, so it suggests random books based on what's popular on Kindle at the moment. The lock screen ads have gotten pretty bad.
I think the kindle is a lot better than a tablet if you read a lot. I can read at the beach or pool, which you can't comfortably do on a tablet. The light doesn't keep me up like a tablet/phone does. And most important, I can read at night without keeping my spouse up. If you are an avid reader, a tablet screen is no match for a real e-reader.
