I really appreciate this thread. I am also 40 and have lately been thinking more seriously about retiring with a similar liquid portfolio balance: $1MM in brokerage, $550K in alternatives which will mature over the next few years mostly, and around $900K in retirement. I also have $550K in home equity and $1MM in rental property equity.
Did you have to split your assets in the divorce? Are those asset numbers quoted yours alone?
Yes and yes. It's not final yet, but I should end up with about $4MM and he will leave with about $2MM net worth (I came in with $900K to his $120K).
Wow that’s a crazy net worth at age 40. Remember following your progress a few years ago and it amazes me how much people earn in banking (not even high stress banking) and tech.

Why not retire?
