My wife and I are planning an extended visit to Spain later this year, joining our son and daughter-in-law who will be on academic sabbatical. We also plan to do some other travel in the region and as we will exceed the 90 out of 100 days that the Schengen area permits, we are applying for the non-lucrative visa (NLV).

There are several hoops to jump over but essentially if you can show financial independence and get a medical insurance plan that conforms to Spain's requirements, it is possible. The NLV offers a path to citizenship if that is of interest (not ours) and requires an in person visit to the consulate in your region of the US.
