I am going to offer a thought that will likely go counter to what many suggest but is based on my experience from visiting Portugal a handful of times. I would only do one of the cities IF you have a round trip flight from the same airport. For example, if you are flying into and out of Lisbon, I would scratch Porto and vice versa. Crazy I know. Why? I love both but I think they give a similar experience and personally value the time not spent traveling between them more. It always takes way longer to screw with the car and drive than you think and before you know it the better part of a day is spent just relocating and getting settled back in into your new accomodations. I would much rather spend that time, as you say, doing something other than sitting. There are great day trips out of both Lisbon and Porto that, in my opinion, make for a better trip despite what most itineraries suggest. Food for thought - have a great trip Portugal is fantastic! We enjoy wine, but I don't want to spend too much time on the road, and obviously very limited on how much tasting one can do if self-driving.
