Was reading about that using ITunes but good to know about the activation lock, did not know that. I will visit ATT and Apple store and see if they have a procedure we can follow. I understand all the hoops to prevent theft and their necessity, just hope there is a procedure we can follow. On the email side Yahoo offer "premium support" and when I spoke to them, they said they would recover the email account, but she would need to subscribe to a monthly subscription support service. It was strange but legit since the phone number was off their web site in the recovery section.You can put it in Recovery or DFU mode and wipe it from a PC. You will need to provide the original proof of purchase to Apple in order to remove Activation Lock if you don't remember the Apple ID credentials. Not an easy process, but if you are persistent, they will do it.
If ATT transfers the number to a new phone I will just purchase her a new IPhone but again a thief would want to do the same and then have access to the number. We will see. Thanks all for the suggestions.
