Remember that housing price was included in the CPI (Consumer price index) from 1953 until 1983 until being removed. This explains why there was a flat line in housing prices as compared with inflation: because they were one and the same, for practical purposes. Once they became detached, then housing prices start to deviate from inflation and show its true hedge potential.
