I know of some who keep many low price good-till-cancelled purchase orders in place and who, albeit very infrequently, have caught some good deals. Fat fingers/glitches periodically occur, such as selling one million shares for 1 Yen instead of 1 share for a million Yen. Typically quickly corrected, too quick to manually spot/trade, but at high cost to the firm, and where orders already in the order queue can be filled (gain from their loss).Apparently we might never know, but this kind of stuff is not unheard of, even in the US.
The lesson is clear though: never ever use market orders.
