I think one should do everything in their power to prevent it from being ruined. These collection agencies "shoot and ask questions later" when destroying your credit without even sending a bill and giving someone the opportunity to pay it.
Screw them. Really.

The bill should be paid, of course, but not at gunpoint. Or twice.
