Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Value of Suspended Spousal Benefit

I thought I had put in the rules into my spreadsheet per your information but my wife points out a hole in my understanding. Our example:

At wife age 67 and my age 68.5, my wife claims a spousal benefit. What are the results if

1. I have yet to claim, OR
2. I claim and suspend
1. If you haven't yet claimed, she will not be eligible to receive a spousal benefit. She could apply to receive her own benefit if she is eligible for one, and then get the spousal "add on" benefit once you start your benefit if her PIA is less than half of your PIA. The amount she would receive will be reduced if she starts it before her FRA. Try different claiming dates in the open social security calculator to see how things would play out.

2. If your benefit is suspended, her spousal benefit will also be suspended.
