Personal Investments • Anybody heard stories of well "prepared" retirees running out of money?

I recall discussions with colleagues who retired in 2000 and 10 years later, their portfolios had gone sideways (as did the market that decade). They were starting to sweat and adjusting their spending plans.
Yes, if the same question was posted in 2009 would get different answers. Same as to why international? Why bonds would also have a different answer if posted in 2001.

It’s great to learn about different outcomes and realize there is a lot of chance involved. The big risk that is being discounted is inflation like 1966 - 19888 that would be devastating to those with annuities. The 2000-2024 time period had only a couple years of high inflation. One 2000 dollars would cost $1.8 in 2024 but one 1966 dollar would cost $3.65 in 1988.
