You didn't specify the size of the room, and that is an important factor in choosing your speakers and placement, as well as amplifier/receiver.I don't have a budget for this and I'm happy to spend for great equipment that lasts but I also suspect there is substantial diminishing returns when it comes to audio equipment. I suspect the value is between $250 to $500 per speaker and after that point the dollar spent for product really goes sour. I am not an audiophile but I certainly do appreciate good audio. I also love a good value so please let me know your thoughts! Any help is appreciated!
$250-$500 per speaker is a bit low, unless you are buying used. IMO, you should spend more than that on your 3 front main speakers at least. There are lots of good options in the $500 - $1000/speaker range.
For subwoofer and surround speakers, $250-$500 is very reasonable.
Of course, how much to spend really depends on your expectations. But good speakers can last for decades.
My main home theater has a 7.1.4 system with 4 subwoofers. That's 15 speakers. The main 7 are Energy Veritas 2.3, 2.0Ci, 2.0 Ri x 2 pairs. Long discontinued speakers. For the Atmos, I have 2 in-ceiling BIC H-310C, and 2 SVS Prime elevation. All are wall or ceiling mounted except the front 3.
The master bedroom is huge and has a 9.1 system with 2 subs. Its' a bit of a mix - Martin Logan for 5, 4 unknown in-ceiling, and 2 cheap Klipsch subs.
Home office has a 4.1, all Polk . One guest bedroom has 5.1, all Polk also . This is in addition to 14 other pairs of in-wall in-ceiling speakers that came with the house
