Just to add to the mix about "Sierras" vs "Sierra"... (of which I favor the former since that's the way I've always heard it said).....

...One never knows who writes articles -- it could be a contractor unaffiliated with the National Park Service -- but this article on hiking in the Sierras posted on the NPS website has "Sierras" six times.

I personally feel it's a minor issue -- and it's not going to be resolved in this thread -- but "San Francisco" vs "Frisco" is major. Frisco just sounds cheap.
