Check out these timers:

They use a AAA battery. The alarm is loud (goes for 30 seconds).
I have 3 of them and find them very helpful when cooking or just needing a 'stop now' reminder...
ADDED: battery operated timers come in all shapes and sizes. Be careful when it comes to the battery the device uses. I had a timer i really liked that used a 'button battery' - but I found that the size battery cost almost as much as the original timer purchase and I needed to replace the battery every 9 to 12 months. I found the above timers use a common AAA battery (as do my tv remotes and my flameless candles). The AAA battery lasts about the same 9 to 12 months but they cost a lot less and I usually always have one on hand when it needs to be replaced.
