I recently read an article about the state of solar panels and unfortunately the situation wasn't good. Apparently many of the companies are more into scamming people and/or making money off financing. Supposedly 1/3 of what you are paying for is just for sales and marketing and a country like Germany has the solar panel cost about 50% of what people in the US pay due to all of that.
I personally haven't had them but in the right location and house I would strongly consider them but not as a lease. I have a friend who knows he won't come out ahead on the deal but wants them as a secondary power for his house in case of power issues.
When we were house shopping I really liked this one house but it had solar panels and another 17 years to run on the lease. Currently they were paying $180 per month and it could go up (3%?) yearly. It seemed to cover most all of their electrical needs but I don't have any interest in inheriting someone else's contract. If it could have been paid off it would have been ok but reading through the contract it looked like the time to have made a pay off had passed and there were no other opportunities, at least not in the contract.
If I had a lot of land and lived in the southwest I would definitely get them.
