Probably right about leases. Also I live in a very wealthy area where buying and selling cars every couple of years on a whim is normal.I wonder about the number of luxury-type vehicles I see on the road where I live...my assumption has long been that the majority of these are leased (this source backs that up, at least as of 2022: https://cartelligent.com/which-car-bran ... is%20brand. )Seemingly every other car where I live is a Land Rover or Range Rover, which also makes me feel they cannot be total junk. If I bought a used one, it would have <20,000 miles and ideally CPO, so would be under warranty for ~3 years/100,000 miles.
I wouldn't necessarily imagine that seeing a lot of (presumably leased) Land Rovers on the road means anything about their long-term reliability, at least unless you happen to discuss the ownership experience with someone who owns an older, out of lease model. Or even better, their mechanic!
I'm sure there are some good Land Rover forums out there that might be more informative about which used models are more likely to be reliable, or at least tend to require easier/quicker/cheaper repairs. The MotorTrend article suggested a lot of the repairs were for nuisance/software issues, which seems pretty typical for most luxury vehicles reliability issues these days...but they also seem to be known for a lot of mechanical problems, including brake, suspension, timing belt, and cooling problems and electrical system issues. And they are known for the repairs tending to be expensive and time consuming. As the only vehicle for a family, it just seems like a risky gamble to me...but then again, you only live once and could end up buying a new RAV4 that has nothing but problems and is far less nice inside vs a fancy LR Defender.
If I didn't have BH tendencies, I'd just get the LR. I do, hence the hesitation.
