My knowledge is limited based on I don't have a need to get one yet. I never heard of a ducted mini split, this is a first for me. I have heard of mini splits where one outside compressor can handle multiple rooms with each room having a control head (not sure what its called). I do know someone with a new heat pump system and it struggles when it's cold, based on what your saying here it must not be one like you had installed. My sister has electric resistance heat and she gets huge bills, unfortunately she has a new HVAC system so replacement to a heat pump is not an option. As I said, I am interested in a dual source heating system at the right price.
Here is an example of a ducted minisplit system (I have no association with website): https://hvacdirect.com/mitsubishi-svz-k ... gJohfD_BwE

It basically comes with an air handler that drops in like any standard ducted system in US and it is pairs with a standard minisplit outside condenser.

What you are describing is a multisplit system where you have multiple heads connected to one outside unit that is different than a ducted system.

And I believe you heat pumps can struggle. The most commonly installed ones in the US are single speed systems made by US manufacturers which will run out of steam in 20s. Inverter systems which are common pretty much everywhere else in the world and on some high end US made systems can go lower. Heat pumps do require more thought than a fossil fuel furnace.
